Southwark's R.E.A.C.H Alliance is a new network for voluntary and community sector organisations and community groups led by a majority Black and minority ethnic teams, and/or serving predominantly Black and minority ethnic communities, and not for profit social enterprises working for the benefit of their local communities.


Aims:

  • To be a collective voice, increasing the influence, representation and active engagement of Southwark’s Black and minority ethnic (BAME) communities in the decisions and policies that affect them, and improve how services are commissioned and delivered.  

  • To advocate on behalf of Southwark’s BAME communities in their dealings with public sector agencies and other statutory and non-statutory organisations. 

  • To provide peer support, helping organisations to develop their thinking, skills and infrastructure to maximise their impact.  

  • Skills/capacity to deliver learning sessions to the sector.


Objectives

  • Identify areas of practical support to build the strength of VCS BAME organisations. 

  • To explore and work collaboratively with external partners to improve the work of the network. 

  • Monitoring the impact of policies as it affects BAME communities/individuals 

  • Give BAME organisations the opportunity to analyse issues, agree priorities with others and more crucially, have the power to instruct representatives to take the key issues forward to the relevant bodies. 

  • Increase partnership work with statutory and non-statutory organisations to advance equality of opportunity, promote inclusivity and act as a reliable resource to public agencies. 

  • To improve communications, raise the profile of BAME groups in Southwark and be a key vehicle to significantly increase community inclusion in the borough. 

  • Promote community cohesion by:

    • Celebrating diversity
    • Encouraging and supporting solidarity
    • Improving individual’s sense of belonging
    • Promoting togetherness
    • Sharing common values

  • Improving the visibility of the BAME network within the sector and increasing activity on relevant statutory / sector platforms
