Small Charity Week 2021 kicks off  today with I ♥ Small Charities Day today, Mon 14 June 2021. This is a day to raise awareness of the work of all small charities across the UK and is lead by NAVCA, national membership body specifically for local sector support and development organisations.

Getting Involved Is Easy!

The week is organised as a series of activities and initiatives to support and raise awareness of the hundreds and thousands of small charities that, every day, make a huge difference to vulnerable communities right across the UK and the rest of the world.

The objectives of Small Charity Week are to:

  • Celebrate the contribution that small charities make to communities throughout the UK and across the world
  • Improve the knowledge, representation and sustainability of small charities
  • Highlight the work of the small charity sector to the broadest possible audience
  • Encourage public giving
  • Work with the small charity sector to develop political engagement at a national and local level

This year Small Charity Week is taking place in the #MonthofCommunity. Month of Community is all about creating a focal point in the year to bring people together to reconnect, celebrate what’s local and help bolster the recovery effort with something that touches everyone. It's an opportunity to bring our neighbourhoods closer and shine a light on the amazing communities we live in and to give community spirit a boost as we head into summer.

Despite the difficult times for every one of us during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people feel that some positive elements have come out of it. One of these being that we feel more connected to our communities. People have reached out to neighbours and have spent more time connecting with each other. Covid19 has shown us that that small charities are more important than ever. The work that they do is invaluable and without them we would have an even bigger crisis on our hands.

Our team at Community Southwark have had the privilege of working with so many small charities during this past year and we have been in awe of their resilience and how they have adapted their services. There are too many to mention but you can see all of our member charities on this page here.

Let's Say Thank you: #SouthwarkStars2021

We want to say a huge thank you to all our small charities and this also includes the amazing volunteers who have signed up to support them. We are holding our annual Southwark Stars Awards Ceremony on the 24 June, please do join us to say thank you to all of our Southwark volunteers. Grab a place here.

BAME Communities

The pandemic has also shone a light on how important BAME charities are to addressing specific needs in these communities and how as a society, we all need to do more to raise awareness and address inequalities.

As part of this response in 2020 we set up Southwark's Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage Alliance (R.E.A.C.H) Network to have a coordinated and strategic approach in better supporting these organisations and tackling inequalities. We are advocates for communities defining their own solution, so if you’d like to join our REACH Network, please get in touch[email protected]
