Latest CS news A hello from Staś our Social Prescribing Officer Published 27 Oct 2021 Hello, my name is Staś (pronounced Stash) I’m the Social Prescribing Officer at Community Southwark. My job mainly involves connecting different parts of the social prescribing sector, helping to raise awareness and to support the Southwark Social Prescribing Network. The aim of social prescribing is to help people live their lives as well as possible by linking them to community advice and social activities to support health and wellbeing. A social activity might be joining a community choir or an art and craft group to support mental health or volunteering at a charity for companionship. Social support might be practical advice for housing, benefit claims or managing dept. A range of different people can make referrals or signpost local residents to social prescribing support. A GP practice can refer people to a Social Prescribing Link Worker who discusses the different kinds of local community activities or support available and can help to contact them. Other health and community advisors such as hospital discharge coordinators or community support staff can also signpost people to community groups for advice or activities. I have a background in community development and volunteer training and joined Community Southwark in October 2020. I have been working from home until recently when we’ve been lucky enough to start going to the office once a week to meet people in person again. Social prescribing will play a big part in supporting the health and wellbeing of Southwark’s residents as we recover from the impacts of the pandemic and as a long-term support for community health and wellbeing.
