Empowering communities is a community engagement programme run by Southwark Council.
The programme comprises of regular individual ward meetings held by councillors, and two multi-ward meetings per year. The aim of empowering communities is to make communicating local issues to the council easier for communities.
This is one of the best ways you can get directly involved in local democracy!
Spotlighting Healthy Food: Community Food championship program
Proudtobeme support and mentors young people planning to make a change in Community food habits and advertisement. In conjunction with UK youth and Biteback, we are helping young people create an awareness campaign that targets junk food advertising in Southwark council.
Inspire 2022-23 – youth-led social action and community events
Proudtobeme and UK Youth are collaborating to empower young people aged 11-25 to make positive community change through Inspire 2022-23.
This flexible program of youth-led social action and community events across the UK will put young people in the driving seat, with a laser-sharp focus on the needs of the whole community.

Empowering Communities Development Officer
The Empowering Communities Development Officer works with the local councillors and community to organise ward meetings. They also organise the multi-ward forum meetings for their area.
Community Champions
In each multi-ward forum, a Councillor will be a community champion and will chair these meetings, ensuring they operate effectively.
Area Multi-Ward Forums
Twice a year, the council hosts a multi-ward meeting for residents across several wards. These meetings are mainly for funding programmes information, process, and announcement of decisions.
