Southwark plans to strengthen protections for private renters.

The council’s ambitions to transform private rented homes are underway with plans for new private rented property licensing schemes across the borough.

Over the last few years and especially since the start of the pandemic, increasing numbers are experiencing a decline in mental wellbeing. This is particularly prevalent amongst many living within the private rented sector who may experience anxiety due to uncertainty in employment in addition to feelings of isolation for many others. With the private rented sector in Southwark growing steadily from 12.5% in 2001 to 29.4% in 2019, improving conditions and quality of accommodation offered is a key principle for the council.

The council want all residents, landlords and business owners to share their views and provide feedback on the scheme proposals by taking part in the public consultation that has been launched.

Everyone’s participation is important, and they really want to hear the views of all of our residents as this can affect how we deliver on our commitment to ensure Southwark is a place where families remain and choose to do so.
