During the Covid-19 crisis there has been some really inspirational examples of people pulling together to help their communities. We wanted to share some of these lovely examples to shine a light on the good that is happening across the borough. Our idea is to do a weekly 'Good news story' blog or social media post, or both!
Our very first Good news story is from Burgess Sports!
Burgess Sports are delivering Week 8 of their fantastic Covid-19 Food Programme; in these strange times they are trying to help their community in the best way that they can. The team are delivering jigsaws along with the food deliveries this week and running a fun competition, the first family to complete the jigsaw and send a picture wins a prize!
CEO Alejandra Teixido says, 'In these strange circumstances, the whole world is in the same ocean but not in the same boat, unfortunately, many are swimming and others are in big yachts. We feel privileged to be in the position to bring support to many members of our local community'.
As the team can't provide their usual after school activities, holiday sports camps, leadership training and healthy eating workshops, they have instead set up this Covid-19 food programme that's currently providing over 200 free meals a week to families and individuals in need in the local community. Franco, Burgess Sports's amazing chef, prepares food from fresh ingredients in the Southwark Tigers clubhouse (their home) in Burgess Park.
Alongside this, the Burgess Sports team are celebrating their Chef Franco who has been shortlisted for the 'Fit and Fed Street Games National Awards'.

Aside from the food programme, the team are also developing online activities for their participants. They are building a weekly programme of events that anyone can join and enjoy. You can follow their Twitter feed here:
